Seminar on the European Labour Law 

The seminar on the European Labour Law in the field of equal treatment of workers and protection against discrimination conducted within the framework of the elaboration of National Programme of Harmonisation of Georgian Legislation with that of the EU, was held in the conference hall of GEPLAC on April 29-30, 2003.

Mr. Hugh O’Neil, the lawyer of “Marcus Lynch Solicitors” (the Republic of Ireland), GEPLAC Short-Term Expert conducted seminar with participation of representatives of Ministry of Health, Social Protection and Labour, Labour Inspection, Trade Unions and GEPLAC experts. Article 141 of the Treaty establishing the European Community and a number of EU Directives regulating the field were discussed during the seminar as well as the compliance of Georgian legislation with them. The following Directives were analysed:

- Council Directive 75/117 on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the application of the principle of equal pay for men and women; 
- Council Directive 76/207 on the implementation of the principle of equal treatment for men and women as regards access to employment, vocational training and promotion, and working conditions;
- Council Directive 97/80 on the burden of proof in cases of discrimination based on sex;
- Council Directive 2000/43 implementing the principle of equal treatment between persons irrespective of racial and ethnic origin;
- Council Directive 2000/78 establishing a general framework for equal treatment in employment and occupation.
